We’ve seen plenty of unsuccessful drawbridge jump attempts in our lives, but this Audi Q5 thief managed to (somewhat) pull it off.
We’ve all seen our fair share of movies and TV shows with dramatic car chase scenes, some of which are realistic, but for the most part, exhibit things that, well, simply aren’t possible. That typically doesn’t matter, however, because those scenes exist only for dramatic effect, of course. Time and time again, we’ve seen folks try to mimic certain small and big screen stunts in real life, often with less successful results, but that wasn’t exactly the case with a thief that made off in someone’s Audi Q5 in Seattle, Washington recently.
Rather, according to KIRO 7 news, the person behind the wheel of this Audi Q5 found themselves on the wrong end of a police chase after the law spotted the stolen SUV sitting in traffic, waiting as the University Bridge at Portage Bay was raised up to let a water-going vessel pass underneath.
As one might imagine, that seemed like a great time to apprehend the suspect without having to worry about them trying to flee. However, the driver had other ideas.
Instead of surrendering, the thief instead opted to move into the oncoming traffic lane, hit the gas, and smash through the barriers, then proceed to jump the drawbridge, just like something out of a movie scene. We’ve seen people try to jump drawbridges in the past, only to wind up wrecked on the other side – or worse, in the water below – but in this case, they somehow amazingly stuck that landing.
After this miraculous stunt, the Audi Q5 driver simply continued to drive away, because as one might imagine, the police weren’t going to try and do the same, potentially risking life and limb. Despite successfully executing this impressive feat, the driver wound up ditching the SUV near Northeast 42nd Street and Pasadena Place Northeast, where police found it with quite a lot of damage – a broken windshield and a “destroyed” undercarriage, according to law enforcement, which isn’t exactly a surprise – we aren’t talking about some lifted monster truck here, after all.
As for the perpetrator, well, they managed to get away, at least, for now, even in spite of assistance from the local police helicopter unit. The law notes that the driver may have suffered some injuries as a result of this incident, but for now at least, it seems as if someone actually managed to pull off the type of stunt typically only reserved for fictional scenarios.
